Case Studies

Shannon Lewis

Shannon Lewis first went to GEMS Camp in the summer between 9th and 10th grade. Shannon’s first summer experience was focused on developing leadership skills in addition to the math, science, creativity, and career related activities. She was preparing to become a mentor to the younger girls the following year. Prior to attending GEMS Camp, Shannon had an interest in going into the healthcare field. Through GEMS, Shannon has learned about other career opportunities, such as engineering, and met many women who inspire her to follow in their footsteps.

Taylor McCowan

Taylor McCowan knew at a young age that she wanted to design things. When she attended The GEMS Camp in the summer between 8th and 9th grade, she learned about engineering and realized there were many ways she could apply her desire to design.  She can become a civil engineer, or more specifically a structural engineer. Through her GEMS’ experience, she was introduced to a world of possibilities and the tools to help her pursue them. She learned more about science and how to approach it in a way that has improved both her interest in and her capability with it.

Gabrielle Walker

Gabrielle (Gabby) Walker is currently a 7th grader and has participated in GEMS Camp for two summers already. Her mother found out about the GEMS Camp from a flier at their local library. Gabby’s mother, a one-time math teacher and now counselor, encourages Gabby and her older sister, Trinity, to take advantage of opportunities to learn. Gabby was interested in STEM activities in elementary school but didn’t have the opportunity to explore her interests in the summer until she was old enough to attend GEMS Camp. Gabby’s sister had already been going to the camp for a few years when she started.

Trinity Walker

Trinity Walker is a senior in high school this year, looking forward to attending college next year to study subjects that will support her goal of becoming a physician’s assistant in the public health field. She started attending the GEMS Camp in the summer before 7th grade. Trinity has always been interested in science and knew something about engineering before the camp because her cousin and his wife are both engineers. She was able to improve her science and math skills at the GEMS Camp and to learn more about the particular areas that interest her. Having people come in and talk about their careers has helped her think about her own path.

Anika Sinha

Anika Sinha is currently a sophomore in high school. She attended GEMS Camp for the first time in the summer before 8th grade. Her family had recently moved to Texas from Florida. She was making the transition to a new community at the same time many girls feel out of place and lonely. As an admitted introvert, Anika found a welcoming place at GEMS Camp and has learned to put herself out there in ways she wouldn’t have dared before.
